German Oktoberfest Costumes: Styles and Tips

When it comes to choosing your costume, there’s a dazzling array of styles and designs to consider.

Ladies Costumes
For a feminie look the dirndl is the traditional choice and typically consists of 4 main features, which are listed below. For our range of dirdls, check out or Ladies Oktoberfest Costumes

1. The Blouse
This is generally a short, white top with puffy sleeves that is cropped just above the waist. This is worn under the bodice of the outfit.

2. The Bodice
This sits tight to the body, almost like a corset, with a deep neckline. The neckline of the bodice is traditionally either rectangular or slightly rounded in shape. The bodice joins in the front center of the body below the chest, and it is commonly secured by ribbon lacing. The bodice is often embroidered or decorated with traditional Bavarian patterning.

3. The Skirt
Traditionally, a dirdl features full-length skirt; however, for more modern designs it is now commonly mid-length or short skirt. It is pleated and/or gathered in at the waist, and the material is often coloured or printed. It is typically attached to the bodice. For modern, shorter styles, it is common for a petticoat will be worn under the the skirt to give it more length and volume.

4. The Apron
The final piece is a narrow apron which covers the front middle section of the skirt. It is traditionally one colour but may feature patterns and/or trims.

To accessorise your Dirndl, consider adding stockings and a flower crown!

Mens Costumes
For a more masculine look, the Lederhosen forms the base of this costume.
In German – “Lederhosen” are short leather breeches often decorated authentic Bavarian patterns. They are traditionally either brown, or black leather with attached braces. See our Mens Lederhosen costumes here!

The following extras will help you to finish off your look:
1. Long Socks
2. A Matching Hat.
3. Oktoberfest Check Shirt.

For a more casual look, Lederhosen Suspenders are a great choice!
